How To Keep The Kids Occupied When Camping by Volkswagen Camper Adventures

We hope that you enjoyed our 'Keeping Kids Amused' blog that we published last week in collaboration with our friends Volkswagen Camper Adventures. This week, we're very pleased to be publishing Volkswagen Camper Adventures tips for 'Keeping Kids Amused'. Enjoy!

How To Keep The Kids Amused When Camping

I've been asked on numerous occasions, how do I keep my kids occupied when we go away in the campervan. The truth is, I don't find it too difficult.

The majority of times we book a campsite, it's usually because of its local attractions. That may be a beach, a theme park, a museum or whatever else we decide we wish to experience. When we are visiting these attractions, the van is only really a space to sleep and eat breakfast, so we don't really spend much time in there.

My wife and I have camped at coastal sites ever since our first trip away together, and as a youngster I spent many a holiday at the seaside in my parents caravan, so it isn't really surprising that our two daughters also share our love of the beach.

It's very easy keeping kids occupied with a beach. Who doesn't love the old tradition of sandcastle building? I know I do, especially when they're surrounded by a moat.

When you're bored of sandcastles, why not build a sandboat!

When we aren't camping at the seaside, we love to visit the festivals. Most VW or campervan festivals have a range of activities to keep the kids occupied. You can usually find something along the lines of circus skills, archery, axe throwing and a market place at most festivals.

We are members of English Heritage, and for a family of four, I consider the annual membership fantastic value for money. You're never really so far from an historic site under the watchful eye of English Heritage, and it isn't only their own sites at which you can save money on visiting. There are many partners who offer discounts to English Heritage members on entrance fees.

During school holidays, a number of sites host special events, which are usually fun and educational.

If the conditions are really against us, we always have a range of card games at hand. I've recently taught my eldest daughter how to play solitaire, and now it'll be only a matter of time until I get her playing Poker, and try win back some of her spending money 😁

A few more child friendly card games are snap, happy families, Dobble or pairs.

Cards are easy to travel with, as they don't take up much space but we also have a few travel sized games, such as Guess Who and Battle Ships.

If all else fails, and you struggle to keep the kids happy while camping, go find a penny push machine. The only thing you'll struggle with then, is getting the kids away from it 😁

We hope that you've enjoyed reading all about how Volkswagen Camper Adventures keep their girls entertained when they are camping.  Head over to their blog to read more about what they get up to on their campervanning trips.
